Artificial intelligence is transforming how districts design and analyze surveys.
By generating tailored follow-up questions, AI can make surveys more conversational, dynamic, and insightful. But just because you can use AI for every question doesn’t mean you should.
The key is balance. AI-driven follow-ups work best when used strategically, to deepen understanding where it truly matters, not to overwhelm participants.
With ThoughtExchange’s new Advanced Engagements, you can harness AI intentionally to get to the heart of an issue, uncover deeper insights, and elevate your engagement strategy.
When to Use ThoughtExchange’s AI Features in Advanced Engagements
- When you want to move from “what” people think to “why” they think it
Selecting prompts such as “ask a question that goes deeper” helps uncover the why behind the response and reveals underlying issues that might otherwise be missed. - When you want to brainstorm solutions.
If you expect critical or negative feedback, AI can help shift the conversation toward constructive problem-solving. Use “AI goes next” and then select“brainstorm solutions” to encourage respondents to share ideas for improvement and help turn frustration into forward momentum. - When addressing complex or sensitive topics.
For questions about trust, communication, workload, or other emotionally charged areas, AI can reflect participants’ input through AI summary follow-ups. This mirrors what they’ve shared, showing they’ve been heard and giving them a chance to confirm or clarify their thoughts.

When Not to Use AI Features in Advanced Engagements
There are times when AI follow-ups can do more harm than good. Avoid using them when:
- You don’t plan to read or analyze the open-ended responses.
AI-generated follow-ups create multiple response threads that may not fit neatly into your themes. If you won’t have time to read individual responses and are primarily looking for a clear, synthesized list of ideas, “AI goes next” questions might not be the best choice. - Your survey already feels long.
Overusing AI can make the survey feel repetitive or endless. Keep it concise, use AI only when it adds real value. - You’re gathering quantitative data.
AI is best for qualitative follow-ups, not for rating scales or simple metrics. It may introduce bias if used to interpret or reframe numerical responses.
Keep It Simple — and Human
AI should enhance, not dominate, your survey experience. A few well-placed follow-ups can make your listening deeper and more personal. Too many can make it confusing, inconsistent, or biased.
The goal is to keep your surveys short, focused, and actionable — while still leaving space for digging deeper and providing a positive participant experience.
When used thoughtfully, AI helps you hear the “why” behind responses. But as always, it’s human empathy and judgment that turn those insights into real understanding and meaningful change.
