Whether or not you need to create a ThoughtExchange account to participate in an exchange is a decision that the leaders of an exchange make when they create it. In some cases participants don't need to sign up and in other cases they do.

A leader may, from time to time, wish to have invitees sign up to participate. This might be for security (only specific people can participate), or to gauge and improve the participant or exchange experience.
