Why can't I just rely on Google Translate?
You can! However, in cases where your district serves a large population speaking a specific language, and you find Google Translate lacking in quality or missing important nuances of the language, the ability to enter custom translations enables you to manually input translations. This ensures greater accuracy, fostering better engagement, respect, and understanding amongst stakeholders within your community.
Where to find the Custom Translations feature
To use this feature in your engagements, click on the Gear button in the top right corner while creating or editing your engagement.
Note: Additionally supported languages need to be added before launching the engagement. Once the engagement is active, you will not have the option to add custom additional languages.
This will take you to engagement settings, where you will find the "Language" tab. Here, you can select the language (or languages) you'd like to manually translate.
Note: You can manually translate into as many languages as necessary. Keep in mind that for each selected language, you will have to translate all the required fields manually
Video Guide to Access Custom Translations:
Automatic Translations: You can continue using Google Translate for other languages by making sure the "Offer additional participation languages with Google Translate" toggle is set to ON.
Inputting your Custom Translations
Once you have hit "Apply" in the Language tab, you'll notice that an extra step called "Translations" is added to the Engagement creation stepper.
When you navigate to the "Translations" step, you will see the fields where you can input your custom translations. Click on the Pencil icon to begin editing. The field to enter your custom translations will populate in English and have a prefix indicating the language code of the target language.
Remove the entire string from these fields, including the language code, and enter your custom translations. Once you are happy with all your custom translations, hit "Save and Next" to proceed.
We recommend utilizing the Preview function to get an idea of how the translations will look to your participants.

What Participants See
When participants select their preferred language at the beginning of an engagement, custom-translated languages will be prioritized at the top of the list for easy participant access
Note: While custom translations work with leader-controlled aspects of the engagement, like Exchange or Survey questions, we still utilize Google Translate for the hard-coded text found in the engagement.
