The Participants tab gives insight into how many people have participated in your exchange. Here, you can see a breakdown of:
🤔 Food for Thought
Here’s where demographic questions can come in handy! Use the Demographics tab in tandem with the Participation tab to reveal groups with low levels of engagement. You can then consider these groups in your communication strategy.
- people who have shared thoughts
- people who have rated thoughts
- people who explored the exchange but didn’t share or rate any thoughts
In Participants, participant stats are displayed both at the exchange level and per question.
What do the numbers really mean?
Participants can elect to share thoughts, rate thoughts and review the thoughts already in the exchange. Of course, we encourage each participant to take part in every step, but some will choose to only share their own ideas, others will opt to only rate ideas that others have shared and some will be happy simply to observe (as well as every possible combination of these options). For these reasons, the numbers you see in each step may not add up to your total number of participants since each individual is only counted in the steps they complete.
Whether or not you choose to require email registration will also impact the numbers in Participation. If participants don’t need to register with an email address but return to the exchange multiple times on different devices, they could be counted as unique individuals each time they load the exchange.
Track Participation to Build Trust
Use Participants to track trends in participation rates over time across multiple exchanges. This information may help gauge whether there is growing trust and confidence in leadership.
For example, if Leader Smith shares what she has learned and her action plan after every exchange, participants will begin to feel like true stakeholders and develop trust in the process. As a result, they will be more likely to take part in the next exchange. Leader Smith will then see an upward trend in participation, increasing her confidence that her approach is working.
Note: Keep in mind that engagement levels can fluctuate depending on the topic or time of year. Tracking participation trends over time can paint a clearer picture when it comes to your engagement strategy.
